Michael Schumacher and Mercedes

It seems that Michael has made a bad decision to come back to F1 and choose to join Mercedes GP.
At the age of 42, the old man is still fighting for his 8th championship, yet he didn't even get a podium position after coming back.

Being out qualified and raced by Nico most of the time, Micheal has been struggling with both cars so far.
However, Michael still possesses all of his skills and is still a great driver. I believe these are the main reasons Michael is not doing as good as before:
  • You can not fight mother nature. Being a grandpa and trying to catching up with the young guys is never easy. Clearly Michael is making a lot more mistakes and can not drive with the same consistency as before.
  • It's hard to adjust to a new car. Especially after racing for the same team for consecutive ten years. Michael is so adjusted to drive the Ferrari's and cannot really fully use the Mercedes as he could use the Ferrari before.
  • Mercedes cars are slow. It is simply not fast enough. They are mid field cars and don't have the speed to attack the podium.
  • The change of rules. The introduction of DRS and KERS has made the mid field fighters harder to fight for their positions. This made these cars really easy to be overtaken by those top team cars. Michael in Canada 2011 is a clear example. He could have got onto the podium if there were no DRS.

After all, Michael Schumacher still is a great driver and hope he will get on the podium soon.
